This will include several enemy camps, which you’re free to liberate as and when you wish (although they can be taken back, by Pagan Min’s retaliation squads). When you start your map is completely obscured, and you reveal new areas by climbing to the top of a bell tower to sabotage a radio and reveal the surrounding area. The game cheats a bit by having both always hold back information that would have influenced your initial decision, but the feature works well and helps to obscure the fact that otherwise the structure of the game is almost identical to Far Cry 3. We didn’t like anyone we met and were always very glad when they stopped talking, although we have to admit the facial animation for them all is excellent.įar Cry 4 (PS4) – you have to constantly top up your oxygen when in the mountains There’s not a single other likeable character in the game either, from bible-thumping African gun runner Longinus to the ugly American portrayal of ally Hurk. His portrayal as an English-educated (at least we assume that’s the accent Troy Baker is trying to pull off) homosexual and Ajay’s as an American-accented saviour is at the very least uninspired, and at worst faintly offensive. Whatever else Far Cry 4 gets right though the characterisation is disappointing, with Pagan Min being a minor variation on Far Cry 3’s equally insane Vaas. The game’s story casts you as Ajay Ghale, who returns to Kyrat to scatter his mother’s ashes but finds out he’s the son of a famous resistance leader and instantly gets drawn into a civil war against the psychotic Pagan Min. There’s never a hint of slowdown either, and as with Dragon Age: Inquisition, the implications for what this means for the future are just as exciting as what’s already been achieved now.
The open world is huge and filled with details such as vegetation that reacts to your passing (trees that sway in the downdraught of your gyrocopter are particularly impressive) and bush fires that can flare up with a single Molotov cocktail. None of this puts it in line for any innovation awards but in the end the fundamental difference between Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed Unity is obvious: Far Cry 4 is fun to play.Īlthough Far Cry 4 is also a last gen game, and therefore held back in its design by the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it’s still a remarkably good looking game. Far Cry 4 is essentially the same game as Far Cry 3, only with a different setting, better graphics, and some new co-op features. It also happens that Far Cry 4 has changed less from its predecessor than Unity has, even if many of Unity’s differences are subtractions rather than improvements.
#Is far cry 4 co op update#
Far Cry might be a first person shooter at heart but from climbing up tall buildings to update your map to the endless array of trivial collectables the open world structure is very similar. In fact of all the Ubisoft games Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed are perhaps the most similar. They are after all both sequels in franchises that already have a well-worn template, and they do both follow the Ubisoft open world formula to the letter. But just saying they were different teams doesn’t seem explanation enough for the huge disparity in quality between the two games.
